For 4 months, Israel has used the term 'safe zone' as both a military tactic and a legal pretext to conceal its genocidal activities. The directive instructs people in Gaza to relocate south, ostensibly promoting 'voluntary' migration while claiming compliance with intl law.
Since October 23’, Israel has incrementally designated areas in Gaza, starting from the northern parts of the strip, progressing to the middle, then South Gaza, and now Rafah, as a 'safe zone.' The message is clear: either move south or face the risk of death.
4 months in, it is clear that these zones neither provide safety nor protect children, women, and men from being massacred, whether on the move to a 'safe zone' or while staying there.
Currently, over 1 million people are concentrated in camps around Rafah, an area of approximately 151km², roughly the size of Hyde Park in London. They live in tents without basic services, health care access to clean water, or food. Many starve to death.
In the next phase, many of them will be targeted and killed, pushed to the Egyptian side of the border, or remain displaced for months and years. They have nowhere to go, as Israel has destroyed around 70% of homes in Gaza.
This is not a coincidence, but the intent from day one: to replicate 1948 Nakba and to end the war with as few Palestinians as possible while controlling as much land as possible.
